Green development incentives
Legislator Joe Morelle has proposed that the County Legislature adopt targeted tax breaks to encourage home and business owners to increase the energy efficiency of their buildings.
These breaks would reward those whose renovations met the international LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards by granting property tax breaks on any increase in a building’s value for a number of years after the investment in renovations. These incentives would encourage developers to consider sustainability in renovation projects and would also create further opportunities for construction jobs.
