Increasing opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses
Legislator John Lightfoot introduced and passed increases in the involvement of minority and women-owned businesses on county projects, raising the share of projects targeted for minority businesses by 20 percent and for women businesses by 50 percent. Coupled with existing preferences for local businesses codified in county law, these changes hope to spur the success of minority and women-owned businesses in Monroe County, helping to increase economic self-sufficiency for them and their employees.
This legislation also sought to increase transparency in the area of MWBE contracting by requiring primary contractors to file statements of how they will meet the MWBE goals, and by requiring the administration to prepare an annual report on the county's use of MWBE contractors.
Sadly, that report, due by April 1 of each year, has not been filed as of June 19, 2015.
