Rochester, New York – April 3, 2012. Willie Joe Lightfoot (D-Rochester), Assistant Democratic Leader in the Monroe County Legislature, today offered the following statement in response to the recent tragic deaths of two young citizens from his district.
“Recently, this community has seen the murder of Larie Butler and the untimely death of Alonzo Williams. These deaths point to something deeply wrong with our community. In light of the national discussion currently taking place about the death of Trayvon Martin, now is the time to discuss with our youth the importance of staying away from violence and solving problems peacefully,” Lightfoot said.
“Far too often, a simple mistake can become life changing in the blink of an eye, and we must make sure we talk to the youth of our community to discourage this type of behavior and help them learn how to constructively solve their problems.
“As a father of several young people, I can’t imagine the grief the Butler and Williams families must be facing. My thoughts and prayers go out to them during this very difficult time,” Lightfoot added.
